Depending on the area of travel, it can take hours to days for assistance to be available. That is why, in addition to general first-aid measures, the medicine-on-board courses primarily practice and teach how to deal with possible injuries on board, medical emergencies and illnesses. The focus of the course is on the special features of medical care at sea.

The aim of the course is for medical problems on board to be mastered until professional help is available.

target group

 

The course is aimed at anyone who would like to be able to gain practical experience on the subject of medicine on board for their planned regatta participation, their long-distance trip or their charter trip with medical problems on board in order to take care of the injured and sick in a targeted and professional manner can until professional help arrives. 

The maximum number of participants is 10 people, which guarantees a high quality of learning and practice in the course.

The medicine on board course is divided into a theoretical part and practical exercises.

Topics are:

  • Wound care: Treatment of burns, application of dressings, wound suturing, wound stapling, and wound gluing
  • Injuries to the musculoskeletal system and their care (splints, immobilization)
  • Common medical problems at sea
  • Dealing with life-threatening situations, resuscitation including dealing with defibrillators and airway management
  • Hypothermia, near-drowning accidents
  • Giving medications into a vein, into a muscle, or under the skin.
  • Insertion of a urinary catheter in men and women
  • Instructions for systematic investigation
  • Organization and coordination of external help
  • Equipment for an on-board pharmacy and first aid kit
  • Legal basis
